 The #3 car

In the early days of racing from Kannapolis, the #3 racecar, a 1955 Chevy, was built by the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Champion, Ralph Earnhardt.  Gray London along with his young Crew Chief, Dale, raced this car most often at Concord Speedway in the mid to late 1960s.

Johnny Miller of Kannapolis, who had worked and driven for the famous car builder, Ray Fox of Daytona Beach, FL, ran the #3 against Ralph Earnhardt.  The #3 car won more than its share of races in those days.  When Johnny Miller drove the #21, he put a + between the 2 and 1, so his car number became 3.  When Gray London stopped racing, Johnny ran the #3 for several years.

The #8 car

NASCAR Legend, Harry Gant of Taylorsville, NC, raced a burnt orange 1965 Chevelle in 1973.  The Earnhardt family and Gray London bought the car from Harry Gant in February 1974.  At that time, NASCAR granted the #8 to Earnhardt Racing Team, Inc., and the #8 car quickly changed colors from burnt orange to light beige.  Dale made his debut on the paved track at Hickory Speedway in March, and won his first NASCAR race in this car on July 19, 1974 at Metrolina Speedway near Charlotte.

The #21 car

The #21 car was built by Ronnie Hopkins of Greenville, SC.  It was purchased by Gray London in 1964.  Ralph Earnhardt reworked the racecar at his garage in Kannapolis, and Gray started racing the #21 on the dirt tracks in the Kannapolis area.  Gray’s Crew Chief was the young, 13 year old, Dale.  In 1969, Don Beam of Cherryville, NC won the Concord Speedway Championship in the #21 car.
